Reading a notice
What should I do when I receive an IRS notice?
Identify the notice number, tax year, amount, requested action, and deadline; then verify the information and respond through the instructions on the notice.
Keep every page and envelope, because the date and notice sequence can matter. Compare the notice to your return, payment records, and prior IRS letters. Do not ignore a notice simply because the balance appears wrong: use the stated response or appeal process before its deadline.
